About Dhanteras
Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi) opens the 5-day Diwali festival period, falling on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. It honours Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, and is a traditional day for worshipping wealth (Lakshmi) and purchasing gold, silver or new utensils — considered auspicious for prosperity in the year ahead. Yamadeepdaan (lighting a lamp for Yama, the god of death) is also observed on this evening.
