Mundane astrology — a guide
How a country's chart is read, what each house and planet stands for, and the 20-year world cycle.
How to read a national chart
- Foundation chart selection. Use the most significant constitutional moment — typically independence or proclamation at the moment of declaration.
- The Lagna (ascendant). The Lagna sign colours the national character: Leo → authoritarian pride; Scorpio → resilience and transformation; Sagittarius → idealism; Aquarius → collective ideology.
- The Moon (the people's mood). The Moon represents the masses: Cancer → emotional, agricultural; Aquarius → reform-oriented; Capricorn → conservative, patient; Scorpio → transformative.
- Transits to the national chart. When malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu) transit houses 1/4/7/10, major events — elections, crises, changes of government — become likely. Jupiter over the Lagna brings prosperity.
- Vimshottari dasha of nations. The national Moon's nakshatra at foundation fixes the dasha sequence: a Saturn Mahadasha → a decade of austerity; Jupiter Mahadasha → economic expansion.
- Eclipses and ingresses. A solar or lunar eclipse within 10° of any national planet or the Lagna activates that house's affairs for 6–12 months.

What is a great conjunction?
Jupiter and Saturn meet roughly every 20 years. Each meeting opens a new social and political era, and for about two centuries the meetings fall in signs of the same element. The table lists the sidereal sign (Lahiri) in which each meeting occurs.
